    Great review, as usual. Sounds like both Excire and Peakto do not allow re-organziation of the folder structure, including moving files to other folders or adding/deleting folders. These functions are critical in library organization, especially with the ability to find and group pictures that these program allow. If it is true, that these functions are not available, how could you work around this deficit and re-organize your libraries.

    I have Adobe pirated and had no way to put my money to a scum. The main problem for me is that After Effects has no competition out of the box. Resolve was designed for VFX as an alternative to Nuke and some plugins are exclusive to After Effects and Premiere Pro. I'm glad the alternatives and OFX plugins are becoming popular.

    9:26 - viable alternative to Lightroom? Are you serious?! Lightroom was not good for decade. Afte their 1st process update they screwed everything. But we had no alternative. Today there is. Same task same feature set in one app. Not only that, but MORE, BETTER, FASTER with more control. I know the pain, being user for 12 years, how impossible is to see alternative, and how painful is to ditch the cumbersomeness of Adobe and accept you can achieve the same faster and better. We were with Adobe that stuff must be complicated. Lightroom is slow, lacking, coarse, old, outdated, with ton's of problems under the hood.

    I don't care about their scandals ... but: - I had credit card canceled and replaced by MasterCard since Adobe had data breach. - I paid 10.000 USD for literally the same software that has the same bugs for decade+ - I was fed with their hacks and workarounds they suggest and officially introduce, so the software is still going - I can't stand lack of performance from Adobe software, bugs, crashings, and fact they just flock same old code once more - they do not innovate but rather buy innovative pieces of software or solutions and than they try to comform that into their ecosystem, mostly ruining original performance and stability - their constant subtle workflow changing under the hood and fact the workflow is unbelievable cumbersome compared to competition. - did I mention they do not innovate? They just add here and there another "on button" or lately "ai" solution that fits less demanding - they are oriented toward revenue and so they try to attract abundance number of consumers, rahter to fix problems that are important for real users. The software itself is only byproduct for them, a happy coincidence. They don't care for customers. - they add gimmick half baked add-ons and improvements, neglecting professionals - they are greedy, earning BILLIONS of dollars annually yet they can't fix basic issues that are there for decade - and more: like support is there only if you have truble with payment. All other are incompetent or non-existent. - SUBSCRIPTION is NEEDED even for opening past projects years later. FUCK! I returned to edit one project in Premire Pro 24, after leaving software in 2019 ... having it installed legally, officially, on totally new, very potent computer with latest everything. The experience of editing was so awfull I can't remember worse, even when I edited with cracked Premiere Pro 2.0 on Single core CELERON with 2GB of ram and slow IDE HDD back in 2004. Crashing, slow, lacking, ... unbelievable. And I hate they push software to schools, early locking people in.

    Here's my take... AI tools are just that... another set of tools. How you use them and how much is up to the individual. I chose to become a photographer because I loved how a medium captured the real world and preserved it in a 2 dimensional space. If you start to get away from how the real world looked at time of capture, I think it ceases to be photography, and more art and impressionism. It gets complicated however, are sky replacements in real estate photography ok? or day to twilight conversions? All interesting discussions. But we are an unregulated industry, in techniques, pay, employment, quantifications... don't think anything is going to change soon. I wouldn't reccomend to anyone these days to do it as your primary source of income, unless you have a guaranteed client base or are employed by an organisation. Freelance photography in all genres is an oversaturated market, with a shrinking demand base

    • @Andyhutchinson
      @Andyhutchinson День назад

      100% on all counts. I've said similar things in the other AI videos I've created for this channel. The fact is that AI is a god-send for something like real estate photography where you have to create the best possible end result and generative fill, crop, denoise and sky swap are hugely beneficial tools. And yes, as a profession, photography is a mug's game these days. I only do it on a semi-professional basis and would never recommend it for someone starting out in their working life.

    Personally, l ditched Adobe in 2013 when they launched their subscription only policy. Prior to Adobe, l used CorelDraw which l want back to with version X6. Esp as Corel were offering upgrade pricing to anyone using just about any Adobe product. Then Corel jacked up their prices, introduced subscription and introduced new versions more rapidly. Then l saw Affinity Designer in 2015. At just £29.99, it was worth it to be curious. And I'm glad curiosity got the better of me as I have invested heavily in Affinity and have not looked back. I just hope Canva realises the huge amounts of trust and goodwill they have right now and don't squander it.

      I bought both V1 and V2 even though I wasn't happy about being charged twice for it. It's one of many photo editors and utilities I've purchased and which I hope continue to improve because, apart from anything else, competition is great news for consumers. I don't think the Affinity Suite will stay single-purchase though, since Canva's entire business model is built around subscriptions and the value-adds they charge extra for.

    *I totally disagree about Adobe Lightroom. For many years I work for Capture One Pro and for DxO Photolab.* After the introduction of AI masks in Capture One Pro - I do not see what he loses to Lightroom. Capture One's color algorithms have always been one step ahead of Lightroom. And now the AI masks are not inferior. In any case, if you compare price and quality, convenience, functionality, then Capture One Pro is the leader. Most likely, the problem is that you are used to Adobe products and have not banned yourself from working in them. You did not put an end to this issue. If you banned and started working only in alternative products and this would happen at least a year, then 1) you would learn to do everything there, 2) you would not be able to return to Adobe products anymore. I made such a transition, my habits and skills were rebuilt. And now I can't look at Adobe products anymore. And my savings were thousands of dollars over the years.

    • @Andyhutchinson
      @Andyhutchinson День назад

      Ok. Let's break this down. 1) Capture One's colour handling may once have been ahead, but not for many years. LR has steadily improved, while C1 has pushed all optimisations further and further in favour of portrait editing to the detriment of other kinds of photography. It's a tired talking-point that C1 users, who haven't used Lightroom in a decade, keep coming out with and it's just not true. That being said, DxO beat both C1 and LR by some margin when it comes to grading, dynamic range and demosaicing. 2) AI masks in C1 suck so very very badly. If I select a sky mask in LR it nails it every single time and gets the entire skydome and it does it in a fraction of a second. If I try the same in C1 with that useless AI subject brush it fails and then I have to spend 10 minutes dicking about finessing that mask. It's unintuitive, it's clunky and it's totally inaccurate. Sure if you've got some knife-sharp edge of a mountain range (like they hilariously use in the promotional videos) it might get it right, but stick some trees on that horizon and watch C1 completely miss everything around them and then refuse to select it when you try and finesse the mask. It's so bad it's a joke. On1 is just as bad even in the supposedly improved 4.5 release they just pushed out. 3) And so to price - and now I know you're taking the piss. C1 is far, far, more expensive than LR. I can get the Adobe photography bundle, which gets me Lightroom Cloud, Lightroom Classic Photoshop and Lightroom mobile, along with 1Tb of cloud space for $14 a month or $168 per year here in Australia. Meanwhile the Capture One bundle, which gets me, ermmm, just Capture One, costs $26 per month for the very cheapest option which is $312 or almost double Adobe. Or I can be really stupid and buy a 'perpetual licence' for $513 which only gets me updates until the next point release when I have to buy it again!!! It's pretty clear that you haven't seen Lightroom in action or used it yourself in a long time, but I am very familiar with C1 - in fact I used to own a licence to it and I always download the new versions to test them and to see if it has improved. I have a strong point of reference on all of these RAW editors. As I said in the video, I'll happily jump ship when someone makes a better product than Adobe Lightroom, but there's nothing that comes close, least of all Capture One.

      @@Andyhutchinson 1. I have a Sony A7-IV. Color algorithms, color profiles for this camera - all this works an order of magnitude better in Capture One than in Lightroom. Not so long ago, I specially downloaded Lightroom for a trial period and compared work with profiles and color. Adobe both lagged and continues. 2. The Ai-masks in Capture One are beautiful. My experience doesn't match what you describe. AI-masks accurately and accurately recognize objects, background. If there were inaccuracies, they are easily corrected using Blend Options for the layer, as well as using the Refine Mask tool. Well, in the end there is an AI-brush, which also works great. 3. About prices in general funny write. I only buy permanent licenses for Capture One Pro and only during Black Friday discounts (-40%). And then I am not updated every year, but only when there is an accumulation of significant improvements. As a result, compared to Lightroom, I save hundreds of dollars. P.S. It is clearly shown in comparison how AI masks work in the sky and other objects in Lightroom and Capture One in a video called *"AI Masking: Capture One vs Lightroom (Which is best?)."* I cannot insert a link because the RUclips deletes such comments. But if you want, you can find this video and see the comparison.

      lol - the video you shared clearly shows how inaccurate the masks are even with the images he cherry-picked for the video. The best bit is at the end when he says "these types of mask are not possible in Capture One". I decided to download the very latest version of C1 just now and re-tested the masks and they haven't improved at all - it's so very very painful trying to finesse a mask with a complicated outline because the refine tool always selects the wrong thing. Here's a fun video that talks about the properly advanced masking tools in LR - such as the people selection masks - ruclips.net/video/k90iQ3MMNLA/видео.html

      1. Great. I have a Fujifilm X-T4 and a Canon 7D2 and it all works far better in LR than C1. Works better still in DxO Photolab. 2. They work great but "if there are inaccuracies". I can't remember the last time I had to finesse a sky mask in LR - it just works every single time. In fact I have an adaptive preset that applies to all images on import into LR which creates an AI sky mask and complimentary ground mask automatically so I don't even have to hit the Sky mask button - I just go into the masks panel and there it is - a perfect sky mask. 3. So basically you have to hang around until once-yearly sales to upgrade your software (and even at 40% off, it's *still* more expensive than my Adobe bundle incidentally). And then you go without updates for years, while I get updates rolled out all the time keeping my software bang up to date.

    I remember they brought some of the features into photos after discontinuing Aperture but it does seem like they've built on it since then. I'm still pretty well embedded in Lightroom but I feel like they could really make some market share with Adobe's AI issues and subscription prices if they actually put out any marketing.

    Good information! I'm jumping ship for a few reasons. Firstly, is the AI scanning / file upload process that I was unaware of. I have nothing to hide but hate the idea of my files being uploaded, even if temporarily, without a clear message indicating that it's occurring. I've also been looking for a less bloated alternative for basic photo editing. I can use CC for free through the company I work for, so cost isn't a factor. Secondly, I'd rather patronize another company as long as their software gets the job done. Having recently tried Affinity Photo 2.5, for me it does just that. It has what I need as an amateur photographer who isn't interested in all the bells and whistles Adobe has to offer. And the way I see it, if we want true competition, we need to support the smaller companies so they can afford to compete on features. If course, a business built on Adobe's products can't just up and jump ship, but for those like me, I think there are good alternatives. Lastly, Adobe's attitude with its licensing, shady anti-consumer practices, and bloated buggy software has tipped me over the edge. Also, Bridge, Camera Raw, Lightroom and Photoshop could have all been condensed into 2 products at most rather than having features that overlap and the quirks and awkwardness of having these products try to work together.

      All perfectly sound reasoning. I would say that Affinity stopped being the little guy when they were purchased, four months ago, by the global behemoth that is Canva. Affinity also charged everyone to upgrade to v2 of their software despite the 'single fee' pricing. Also, given that Canva is a built on a subscription based model, it is surely only a matter of time before the Affinity suite follows suit. Agree regarding the software. They keep ACR of course because Photoshop needs a RAW editor. If Bridge was combined with ACR it would effectively be a hybrid version of Lightroom Classic, which is probably not something they're interested in pursuing. :)

      As I explained in the video, I need to maintain my Photography subscription because no developer has created a viable alternative. I have nearly 250,000 photos in my LR Classic catalog generated over two decades of use, all with flags, tags, GPS, keywords and develop settings and no viable alternative to move them to, even if I could transfer them. And as a paying customer I have more right to hold Adobe to account than those folks who ditched them a decade ago and are simply viewing this video for confirmation bias.

    ...Adobe is (probably) the only AI generative service that licenses its training data. At least give them that. The others just scrape the Internet copying everything, copyrighted or not.

    I have made the point that the camera is self has a lot of AI in it. That's not to say we should just be cutting our images to bits but the actual camera itself has many AI features especially modern Mirrorless cameras auto detect auto subject detection. They are AI. I could name another couple of processes turning a coloured image into black-and-white that is AI.... I'm not saying you should hack your images to bits with the clone tools, but all I'm saying is AI does exist in the camera itself. And I do believe there are some positive uses for AI images. I remember doing a wedding once and a young person was getting married but their mother sadly was in an old peoples home with dementia. I was able to take a photograph of her and place her in just one photo in the wedding scene it meant the world to the person this was a positive use of AI and no one had a problem with it because that person had a large emotional attachment in that person's life. Sometimes I have removed broken teeth from photos because the people felt so conscious they didn't want to smile. There are positive uses of AI. It's not bad and I do think you need to be mindful of what you're doing but I don't throw the good bits of it out, not at all but that's just me and I am a professional photographer but we are also Artist as well and Photography is art. Does that mean I hack all my images to bits with the AI tools? No it doesn't just in certain situations. It is okay.

      All true. I was making this exact argument in another comment. I know a professional real estate photographer whose life has been transformed by A.I. because he can fix up stuff the client might not want in the shot. I think for many commercial purposes, it's absolutely a powerful and useful tool in the right hands. :)

    Where has your channel been all my life? This is the most watchable and on-point analysis of the current Adobe fiasco that I've found. I do think that Adobe's virtual monopoly could weaken over the next few years. For one, there's beginning to be competition. Affinity and ON1 (of which I have a much higher opinion than you do) are both at about the same level of maturity, which is to say that they're passing the watershed where they're solidly usable. (Although I have used ON1 for years because its tools work for me and Lightroom's just aren't that great.) I'm very hopeful about DaVinci and and its Fairlight component, which I have just started learning. Affinity is at V2.5, the same version where Photoshop sat when I first starting learning it. Photoshop is at V25. It has accumulated that many iterartions of sometimes clever tools and flabby bloat. Affinity and ON1 will continue to improve while Photoshop and Lightroom continue to deteriorate. While you can't get a job in visual arts today without Adobe skills, tomorrow, there will be no jobs. The entire industry will be gig work. (Not absolutely, but you get the idea.) That fragmentation will mean that hetrogenious environments will be the norm.

      I appreciate it - thanks. I'm currently giving the new version of On1 a thorough test and it has improved a bit. In terms of work you're absolutely right - I've done a few videos about the impact of AI that discuss this in a bit of depth. We thought the stone had dropped in the pond with regard AI but actually it's still on its way towards the surface waiting to make impact.

    The head-teacher at my art school insisted we use adobe products, then we had a guest star teacher, this superstar-illustrator who had worked for all the big companies who shocked her when he told us he doesn't give a shit what we use as long as it can export to tiff. The internet at the school also had a tendancie to not work during the first hour in the morning for some reason, and thus we couldn't launch any adobe products because you need internet a internet connection to use that stuff. Thankfully the computers also had software such as Krita installed on it.
